Sixth Annual BSS Flushing Dog
Training Seminar December 4-6, 2009 It is that time of year again
with fall just around the corner and hunting season soon to be in full swing.
If you want to hone the skills of an experienced dog or introduce a young dog
to flushing work for the first time then the BSS Upland Seminar is a must
attend event. The training is hands on for three days with two of the best
trainers in the business, Ray Cacchio and Fred Bradley. Both men are expert
trainers and holders of multiple Springer and Cocker National Championships.
The training seminar is three days of intense activity with the more
experienced dogs being immediately exposed to a lot of live bird work. Lesser
experienced or younger dogs are first evaluated, and if needed, placed in a
separate class with either Ray or Fred to determine exactly what goals need to
be accomplished over the three days to improve the dog and handler. Our
trainers will ask you about what you wish to accomplish with your dog and then
evaluate YOU and your dog for potential. Most of the dogs all have natural
ability and a nose full of bird sent gets them excited for the day. The handler
is another experience all together and this is where the trainers earn their
money. Fred says that "I can generally get through to the dog but most handlers
are not nearly as smart as their dog so it just takes longer"! The BSS
guarantees you a great time and learning experience for you and your dog.
This is the sixth BSS Flushing Dog Seminar and each year the dogs and
handlers get better and better. This is no accident. The handlers are listening
to the trainers and taking what is learned at the seminar home and continuing
the training. Each year we have returning attendees and the performance from
one year to the next is amazing. We run the seminar regardless of the weather
so come prepared with rain gear and for other abrupt changes (hot and cold) in
the weather. The gallery is allowed to walk behind each dog that works in the
field so that after running you own dog you are able watch others run their dog
and learn from their sessions. Following other handlers and dogs in the field
allows one to concentrate on how to correct a problem or improve an area of
weakness in their own handling while observing a similar issue with another dog
and handler. More simply put, it is generally easier to pick up what you are
doing wrong by watching some one else make the same mistake.
This event
is unbelievably priced at $350 for the entire three day weekend; including all
meals prepared at the seminar site, and yes, please feel to bring your favorite
dish(s) to share with everyone. You will make new friends and renew
acquaintances with old ones. You will leave knowing a lot more about your dog,
and yourself than you did when you arrived. Due to the intense nature of the
seminar we are only able to accommodate 30 dogs with handlers. We allow a
limited number of participants without dogs to be involved in all aspects of
the seminar for $150, but if your dog is ready then sign up for the full
experience. If you are thinking of the seminar as a gift then make sure to
reserve early as the slots go fast.
RV electrical hookups for eight
campers (four 30amp and four 50amp) are available at no charge for those who
would like to dry camp for the weekend. Water is available to fill your tanks
and a waste station is on site. Mark you calendar and join us for the fun and
festivities. Contact the Boykin Spaniel Society by phone at 803-425-1032 or via
